Definition of a strategic business unit
Strategic business unit (SBU) is a work unit in a company that has a mission and task to elaborate various types of business plans that have been made, both in the SBU division and in other divisions. This has the main goal, which is to develop the market reach of the products produced by the company. With the SBU, the mission of each unit will be clearer and more focused, which aims to achieve the company's vision and mission which, in general, is very broad in concept.
Characteristics of strategic business units
A unit can be said to be a strategic business unit if it fulfills, at least, these 3 characteristics. First, an SBU is a unit that manages a variety of different types of business or similar types of business; the scope of its main work is strategic and autonomous planning. The second characteristic of the business unit strategic planning or strategic business unit is that this unit has or can determine its target market. The last characteristic is that SBU has a leader (a manager) who has competence and responsibility in the area of strategic planning and profitability.
The formulation will then be developed into a strategy and further developed into a program by the business unit strategic planning. The program is then implemented, monitored, and evaluated. The results of the evaluation will be the basis for the next business mission.
Generally, SBU stands under a section or division of corporate planning. This is what makes SBU can consist of only one SBU unit, or up to many units, depending on what type of business is issued and wants to be developed. With this SBU as well, the company will have many types of strategic planning that can be used to develop the company's products in the future.
Process or workflow of a strategic business unit
Strategic business units have their workflows. The first thing an SBU needs to start its planning process is a business mission. This business mission is based on the mission set for each business production unit. Then, the SBU will conduct a SWOT analysis, both on company internal factors and external factors. After the analysis results have been determined, the SBU can make formulations to achieve business goals.
Business unit strategic planning, or also known as a strategic business unit (SBU), is an important component to be developed within a company. The reason is that the SBU division has different concepts, missions, and work assignments compared to other types of units in a company. If a large company wants to continue to survive with the market condition, this SBU division is one part of the company that must be maintained and developed. Actually, what is a strategic business unit (SBU)?
