In a management process, planning is one aspect of management that should not be made haphazardly. Planning can be likened to a root of a tree; strong roots will make the tree grow well. So even with planning; good planning will make the management process run well and achieve managerial goals. There are many types of management processes, one of which is business management. Just like other management processes, planning in business management must be well-made and effective.
Definition of planning
In management activities, planning is the first process that must be carried out. Planning is an activity in which a person or group of people thinks and makes a design about what needs to be done to achieve a goal. From that "what" thing, it will develop into who can contribute to that goal, how to achieve that goal, when the intended activity is carried out, where the strategic location is, and why to choose the concept of the intended activity.
Based on these definitions, it can be said that planning is an activity that requires thought. Also, planning requires skills for forecasting and projecting something in the future. This is done to achieve organizational or business goals.
Types of planning
In general, 4 types of planning are generally known in planning in business management. In its application, combining several types of planning must be done. The four types of planning are operational plan, tactical plan, strategic plan, and contingency plan.
A strategic plan is an activity to determine the goals, general strategies, programs, and methods of an organization or business. This strategic plan is also called a long-term plan made with various types of strategic planning. This strategic plan is the main plan for developing a business. Second, a tactical plan is an activity to translate a strategic plan into every division in a business. With a tactical plan, each division or department will have a clear concept of the task.
An operational plan is the breakdown of various task concepts made on a tactical plan. It can be said that the operational plan is a description of day-to-day activities and short-term plans of the business. Finally, the contingency plan is a special plan because it is done to anticipate the unexpected in the future. Contingency plans are also called business recovery plans.
Planning in business management has many functions. The first is as a tool to achieve business goals. Second, planning is useful for minimizing the risk and uncertainty of the business climate. Third, planning can be a guideline for implementation control. Fourth, planning can make coordination between people or between groups can be established properly. Fifth, planning can be a place to generate new ideas and creativity in business.
